Dolores is a municipality in the Valencian Community, Spain. Located in the south of the province of Alicante in the region of Vega Baja del Segura. It has 7,246 inhabitants (INE 2015). The city limits the north with Elche, the south with Almoradí and Daya Nueva, the east with San Fulgencio, and the west with Catral.
The name of the town has its origin in the Marian advocation of Our Lady of Sorrows. The custom of using religious names to designate newly created settlements was a constant in Spain since the time of the American conquest. In particular, Cardinal Belluga, promoter of the development of important colonization and settlement in the areas surrounding the lower Segura River, baptized others of its foundations with names such as San Felipe Neri or San Fulgencio. Although there is a version of the name of the locality in Valencian, Dolors, 1 is an unofficial denomination with no current use in the town, which, like its entire region, is Castilian-speaking.
