San Pedro del Pinatar is a Spanish municipality of the Region of Murcia. Being on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor has great tourist and ecological appeal. To the north of the municipality is the natural park of the Salinas and Arenales of San Pedro del Pinatar.1 In a radius of less than 55 km you can find three urban centers of more than one hundred thousand inhabitants: Torrevieja, Cartagena and Murcia.

Despite being a relatively small municipality, its strategic location on the coast and its environmental qualities have led to a very rapid growth of the population and an increase in commercial and economic activity. At the same time, there has been a great urban pressure that has minimized the land dedicated to agricultural tasks.2 In this way, the fishing and exploitation of the salinas have ceased to be their almost exclusive economic activities. Traditional festivals are held in summer, which means that many people who spend the summer in the area can participate.

It is a small peninsula that has fourteen kilometers of coastline divided between the two seas. The beaches in the Mar Menor are: Villananitos, La Puntica and La Mota. In the Mediterranean are the beaches of La Llana, which are the Playa de las Salinas, Barraca Quemada and Punta de Algas. Next to the first one is the port. On the other side of the port are the Playa de la Torre Derribada and El Mojón. There are two ramblas, the Rambla de las Siete Figueras, which, from the border with Pilar de la Horadada, flows into the salinas; and the Rambla de Casas Blancas that comes from the municipality of San Javier and crosses the municipality until it ends at one end of Villananitos beach.10

The Sierra de Escalona that delimits the coastal depression, next to that of Carrascoy, provides this profile known as "The sleeping beauty" because of the shape of the woman lying down that seems to represent. In this photo you can see the mountains from a pond in Las Salinas.

It is located in a coastal depression that ends in two population centers: El Mojón, shared with Pilar de la Horadada, in the province of Alicante, and Lo Pagán, which borders San Javier. Among these nuclei is the most important wetland in the Region of Murcia: the natural park of Salinas and Arenales of San Pedro del Pinatar, with almost 900 ha. In this park you can find flamingos, seagulls, albatrosses, herons, and owls; It has mobile dunes, with a characteristic flora: sea lilies, reeds and reeds.

San Pedro seen from the salt pans. The reddish color of the water is produced by algae that live in very salty environments.

You can access the city from the motorway of the Mediterranean at its exit number 775 or on the N-332 road.
